How to Use Bookmarks in Google Docs

Using bookmarks in Google Docs, you can easily navigate through a document using hyperlinked text. Here's how!

Google Docs is an incredible document creation app, a critical part of Google Workspace. And the tools inside of Google Docs make it a perfect app for everything from book writing and formatting to creating quick meeting agendas.

Regardless of the document you create, the Bookmarks tool can help you point to specific text and so much more.

The Benefits of Using Bookmarks in Google Docs

There are many reasons why you might find the Bookmarks tool inside Google Docs super useful. For example, the Bookmarks tool:

  • Simplifies collaboration: If you use Google Docs for business, chances are you create documents that require collaboration between multiple people. Using Bookmarks, you can point collaborators to various parts of a document, which eases confusion and makes collaboration faster.
  • Makes finding text in a large document easier: Writing a 500-page book inside Google Docs and need your editor to take a look at a specific part of the text? Creating a 50-page business proposal and need your accountant to check something out? Simply create a bookmark. It makes finding specific text a breeze, especially inside larger documents.
  • Helps you create a hyperlinked table of contents: If you're creating a book or a document with multiple chapters or sections, a table of contents is a great way to point readers to the right place. Using Bookmarks, you can add a clickable hyperlink, giving users a quick way to find specific text.

How to Create Bookmarks in Google Docs

Using the Bookmarks tool is quick and simple. First, let's start with creating a simple bookmark. To do so, open your Google Doc and get ready.

  1. Find and select the text you wish to use as a bookmark.
  2. Select Insert from the top menu and then select Bookmark.

You'll then see a blue bookmark next to your selected text.

Now, to complete your bookmark, you'll need to create a link to that bookmark. You'll first need to decide where you want to place the link. For example, if you're creating a table of contents, you can link to the name of a specific chapter.

Or, you can add a collaborator's name and place a "click here" to point collaborators to your bookmark. Follow these steps to complete your bookmark:

  1. Select the text you've chosen to link your bookmark to.
  2. Then, select Insert and then Link. Or, you can choose the Hyperlink icon in the menu.
  3. Select Headings and bookmarks, and then select the bookmark you've recently created.

The text will now feature a link. When clicked, it'll take you right to your bookmarked text. Super simple, right?

How to Remove a Google Docs Bookmark

Once you're done using a bookmark, you can simply remove it. To delete a bookmark:

  1. Select the Blue Bookmark icon.
  2. Select the Trashcan icon or Remove. Then, you're done!
